Is Acupuncture the same as dry needling?

Dry needling and  acupuncture are distinct practices that both involve inserting thin needles into the skin but differ in their techniques, philosophies, and goals.

Dry needling, rooted in modern Western medicine, focuses on relieving musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction by targeting specific myofascial trigger points, often performed by physiotherapists.

In contrast, acupuncture, based on traditional Chinese medicine, aims to balance the body's energy (Qi) by inserting needles along meridians to address a variety of conditions, including pain and stress, with a holistic approach provided by licensed acupuncturists.

Acupuncturists can also locate and treat sore or painful trigger points traditionally known as ashi points.

While they share the use of needles, their underlying theories and applications vary significantly.

What to expect with the first acupuncture session?

Your first acupuncture visit begins with a detailed consultation to determine the best approach to the treatment, as well as observations including tongue and pulse analysis.

The practitioner explains their findings, outlines a treatment plan, and suggests the number of sessions needed.

During the session, you’ll relax on a comfortable massage table as thin, sterilized needles are inserted into specific points, often accompanied by calming music.

Post-treatment, you may feel relaxed and noting symptom changes.

Wear comfortable clothing and communicate openly for the best experience.

How many acupuncture sessions do i need?

While acupuncture may provide noticeable results quickly for some, however, it is not commonly known as a quick fix.

Everyone responds differently to acupuncture depending on age, constitution, sensitivity, the condition itself,  length of time of the complaint whether it is acute or a chronic conditon.

A certain consistency is required.

In general once a week for four weeks is generally advised to assess progress and and to aim for optimal results.
